Airports

Three good options, all about the same kind of drive. Rent a car; you’ll want one up here.

≈ 2 hours away

Asheville (AVL)

The scenic route in. A smaller airport with easy rentals, then a genuinely beautiful drive west through the mountains.

≈ 2.5 hours away

Atlanta (ATL)

More flights and usually better fares. The drive north is easy interstate until the last stretch, when it turns pretty.

≈ 2.5 hours away

Greenville–Spartanburg (GSP)

A solid backup if the fares line up — a calm airport and an easy drive up through the foothills.

Chattanooga (≈ 2 hrs), Knoxville (≈ 2 hrs), and Charlotte (≈ 3.5 hrs) can work too, if that’s where the cheap flight is.

Where to Sleep

About where you’ll sleep

Estate rooms are limited — we’ll reach out directly if there’s space for you on site. Everyone else: the valley has rental cabins, an 1840s inn, and yes, a casino. It’s all on the lodging page.

On the Road

The drive up

The last stretch into the valley is two-lane mountain road — beautiful in daylight, properly dark at night. Gas up before you leave the highway, download offline maps while you still have service, and take it slow if there’s weather. December up here usually means cold and clear, but keep an eye on the forecast.
